It’s no secret that we love reading here at Eat Play Say. And interactive books for toddlers are some of our favorite books to read together. Since toddlers naturally have short attention spans, books with engaging components work best. Look for sounds, lift the flaps, sensory elements, and other interactive components in toddler books to keep your littles interested.
Whether you’re building your child’s home library or searching for new interactive books for toddlers, we’ve got you covered. These fun and engaging picks encourage curiosity, support early learning, and make storytime an experience your little one will want to enjoy again and again.
The best toddler books feature illustrations and/or interactive elements that keep littles’ attention! Since toddlers learn best through hands-on experiences and play, books with interactive features like lift-the-flap surprises, touch-and-feel textures, sound buttons, sliders, and pop-ups make storytime even more engaging.
Look for these elements in toddler books:

Age recommendation: 0-6 years
Price: $110 (Tappi Starter Set which includes 3 books and interactive pen); code “EATPLAYSAY” saves 10%
Themes: Animals, Music, Vehicles, Songs, Early Learning
Skills it encourages: Grasping, following directions, attention and focus, vocabulary development, early literacy skills
Great for: Child-led reading, interactive learning, and keeping little ones engaged on every page
We love the Tappi interactive book series because it truly brings storytime to life. These tappable board books work with the Tappi Play Pen, a chunky, toddler-friendly pen that fits comfortably in little hands. As children tap different objects, characters, and images throughout the book, they unlock sounds, games, stories, and other interactive features.
What makes Tappi stand out is that your child is an active participant in the reading experience. The book responds to their actions, encouraging curiosity, exploration, and independent learning. Instead of simply listening to a story, toddlers are making choices, discovering new sounds, and engaging with the content in a hands-on way. With a variety of topics like animals, music, vehicles, and early learning concepts, there’s a Tappi book for nearly every interest.
There’s so much to do with Tappi books! For starters, each book contains hundreds of tap targets and hours of audio. You’re really getting so much more than a typical book and the tap targets add variety with each read.
I love that the Play Pen works with all Tappi books and their interactive books grow with your child. Toddlers can tap the targets and listen, while older littles can play games throughout the book. From the baby stage through the preschool years and beyond, these books support vocabulary development, language skills, comprehension, and a lifelong love of reading.
We love sound books for imitating and learning more about cause and effect. For example, press the button, then hear a sound! These are some of our favorites.

There are so many wonderful touch-and-feel books for littles, but the That’s Not My… series is one of my favorites. With books featuring teddy bears, farm animals, and much more, it’s easy to find a theme your child will love.
Each page introduces a new texture alongside simple, repetitive text that helps babies and toddlers connect descriptive words with real sensory experiences. For example, when the story says, “Its feet are too rough,” children can actually feel the rough, sandpaper-like texture. These hands-on experiences help build vocabulary, introduce adjectives, and make new words more meaningful.

Melissa & Doug Poke-a-Dot books are a favorite in our house. The sturdy pages and satisfying popping sounds make these books incredibly engaging for toddlers. To be honest, they’re even fun for adults! Each page encourages little ones to press the built-in buttons, turning storytime into a hands-on experience.
