We’ve all heard building toys are great for children and their development, but have you ever stopped to think about why? When you think of building toys, you might picture things like LEGO bricks, which aren’t age-appropriate for babies and young toddlers. But did you know there are so many great building toys that come long before the LEGO phase?

We rounded up some of our favorite building toys for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and beyond. These toys help develop fine motor skills, problem-solving, creativity, and so much more. In this post, we’ll break down the age recommendation for each set, how many pieces it has, and compare prices. Most importantly, we’ll share what makes each building toy stand out from the rest and other points to consider.

What are building toys?

Building toys are toys that allow children to connect, stack, balance, arrange, or assemble individual pieces to create something new. They range from simple stacking toys to more complex construction sets, with lots of options in between.

The type of building toy little ones play with will change as they grow. Popular building toys include Mega Bloks, DUPLO, wooden blocks, magnetic tiles, and LEGO bricks. But there are so many great options out there!

Why are building toys important for development?

Building toys provide children with a hands-on way to practice multiple developmental skills at once.

This Mega Bloks Building Set is a great introduction to interlocking building toys like Duplo and Legos. While the packaging has an age recommendation of 1 year, you can definitely introduce these to your baby earlier!

With 150 blocks, there are tons of colors and shapes to explore while building. Model pushing the large pieces together and pulling them apart. This helps them develop hand strength and coordination.

These soft, lightweight blocks are safe for little hands and heads. They make an excellent first building toy that grows with your child through toddlerhood. There are many ways to play!

Babies can safely practice stacking towers as they build confidence with fine motor skills. As you play together, model simple positional words like “on top,” “under,” and “beside.” This helps encourage early language development while building and stacking.

Pros

• Soft and lightweight, so there are no ouchies if blocks topple over
• Designed for babies but versatile enough to grow with your child through toddlerhood

• While this set has a lot of interactive components, the 14 pieces limit what you can build
• There aren’t any expansion packs available, so the only way to add more pieces is to purchase a second set

Stacking Cups

Stacking cups are an affordable building toy for babies. They’re versatile so as your baby’s skills grow, so do the play opportunities. 

Stacking and nesting refines problem solving skills, hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.  They also create natural opportunities to introduce functional language like “up,” “down,” “in,” “out,” and “on top.” As your child gets older, you can use stacking cups to identify colors and encourage pretend play. Use them as cups during play kitchen fun, as scoops, or bath toys. 

Pros

• Budget-friendly toy under $10
• Versatile for stacking, nesting, sorting, and pretend play
• Encourages early language development through everyday play

Take Note

• Although babies can safely explore stacking cups, most won’t begin stacking them independently until around 12–18 months

Building Toys for Toddlers

Duplo Blocks

As your young toddler graduates from Mega Bloks, DUPLO blocks are a great next step for interlocking building play. They offer a similar building experience with smaller pieces that are better suited for developing toddlers.

DUPLO also comes in a wide variety of fun, themed sets that make building even more engaging. Simple visual instructions provide an opportunity for toddlers to practice following directions and building alongside a caregiver.

We love these sensory blocks! They’re a great size for 2-year-olds and combine sensory exploration, building, and creative play.

Stack, twist, stretch, and squish them as you build. Some are filled with sand, while others are filled with beads. They’re fun to look at and manipulate but also encourage plenty of imagination. We always pack these with our toys for a plane ride.

They also have themed packs including a castle set and construction set.

• A building toy that grows with your child and can be expanded upon with other themed sets

• The silicone material can attract dust and hair, but thankfully, they’re easy to clean!

Magnetic Blocks

We’ve had these magnetic blocks for a few years now and they’re still a building toy my kids reach for often. They come in vibrant colors, and the satisfying click when the pieces connect adds an extra element of fun.

These are especially great for young toddlers because the magnetic pull makes it easier to connect and stack the blocks. That early success can build confidence and keep toddlers engaged as they experiment with different ways to build.

They’re also one of our favorite travel toys. The included storage bag makes them easy to pack and take on the go. And with over 50 blocks, there are plenty of opportunities for building and open-ended play wherever you are.

There are so many types of wooden blocks out there, and they’re all great building toys. Unlike interlocking blocks, children can stack, balance, sort, and arrange them in endless ways. They’re definitely a classic toy that grows with your child from toddlerhood into the early elementary years.

When looking for wooden blocks for toddlers, choose ones that are slightly larger in size. This makes stacking and building with them easier as toddlers grow in hand-eye coordination and other fine motor skills.

• Solid wood construction
• Great size for toddler hands

Take Note

• Because they’re made of solid wood, wooden blocks are usually priced higher than building blocks made of other materials

Melissa and Doug Blockables

Price: ~$30-45 depending on set
Age recommendation: 2+
Number of pieces: Varies by set

When I first saw the Melissa & Doug Blockables, I knew my kids would love them. And I wasn’t wrong! These wooden blocks and felt play pieces snap together to create different play scenes. It gives kids a fun combination of building and pretend play.

The pieces are a great size for little hands. They’re easy for toddlers to connect and manipulate with no frustration. The included play figures and fold-out play space encourage storytelling and imagination. 

Pros

• Great size for toddler hands 
• Sturdy wooden blocks with play scene included 
• All Melissa and Doug Blockables sets are compatible

Take Note

• The round plastic connectors for the blocks are smaller and may not be appropriate for young toddlers who still mouth objects

Building Toys for Preschoolers

Magnatiles Classic Set

Price: $120

These open-ended STEM toys provide hours of fun. Magnetic building tiles like these can be used to create houses, castles, garages, and even art.

Magnatiles grow with your child, making them a building toy you can enjoy for years. Toddlers enjoy stacking and connecting, hearing the pieces click. Preschoolers and older kids turn them into complex buildings with detailed stories and role play. They’re incredibly versatile and deliver a big bang for your buck.

We especially love Magnatiles because they combine building and pretend play. My kids are always building structures, including dollhouse accessories and other toys to create play scenes. They narrate what’s going on and I love seeing how their little minds work!

Take Note

• Magnatiles are a premium magnetic building toy, and the price reflects that. A large collection can be a significant investment.

Picasso Tiles vs. Magnatiles 

Lots of people ask what the difference is in terms of Picasso Tiles vs. Magnatiles. After playing with both of these products, here’s what I would say. 

Both Picasso Tiles and Magnatiles are great building toys for kids. They provide opportunities for creativity, early STEM learning, and pretend play galore. Each of these brands offers classic building sets with different shapes along with themed building sets. 

Picasso Tiles are offered at a more affordable price. For example, the 100 piece Classic Building Set costs $40, whereas the Magnatiles 100-piece set costs $120.

While Magnatiles are more expensive, I would say the brand is definitely worth the cost. The magnetic pieces are stronger and hold better during building. The pieces are thicker, more durable, and hold up to rough play. The colors of Magnatiles are bolder and more vibrant. Magnatiles also offers more variety in terms of themed sets for play. Their mini Magnatiles sets (pictured below) are some of our favorite travel toys. 

Magnatiles are our recommendation if we had to choose between the two. Especially if you’re interested in themed magnetic tile play sets or travel sets. The magnetic animals and smaller pieces that come with the sets are much more inviting. But, we are big fans of the Picasso Tiles Race Track Building Set. It’s been a favorite toy for almost two years and still going strong! The cars fit easily on the track, and it’s very durable. The sets are a good value for the cost and easy for little hands to set up! With all that said, though, both brands are good building toys and really grow with your children.

Caution: I wouldn’t recommend buying a “dupe” outside of these two brands, as you never know the safety testing results or durability. Since magnets are involved, it’s important to be extra cautious.

Bristle Blocks

Price: $25
Age recommendation: 3+
Number of pieces: 120

Build with bristle blocks like these by pressing pieces together and pulling them apart. The plastic “bristle” pieces on each piece allow for them to stick together.

Instead of snapping together like LEGO or DUPLO, the bristles allow pieces to connect from different angles. Because the pieces don’t need to line up perfectly, children of different ages and skill levels can experience success while building.

Pros

• Affordable building toy under $25
• 120 pieces can be connected at all angles creating endless building opportunities
• Engaging for preschoolers and beyond (even adults!)

• Some users note bristles can fall off after extended play, but the pieces still remain functional

Flower Garden Building Toy

We first discovered this building toy at a friend’s house and my kids loved it. I went home and bought one just like it! It’s a fun, hands-on set that naturally creates opportunities for learning while kids play.

This garden set comes with small, stackable pieces that help children build a garden from the ground up. Pieces include stems, leaves, petals, and stamens in all different colors. Talk about the parts of a flower and how they grow as you build and play.

Pros

• Combines building with hands-on nature and science learning

Blockaroo Building Blocks

Take Note

• This set is more of an investment, and adding additional sets can get expensive.

Wooden Rainbow Stacking Blocks
