The Plastic Free Guide

Non-toxic? No problem. We picked our favorite sustainable toys and personal items for this guide! Items free from plastic and instead made with materials like wood, stainless steel, cotton, and silicone (yep, food grade where appropriate)! We are VERY picky about where items are coming from- making sure that sources are small businesses on Amazon, or sold directly from brands through the Amazon channel.

There are a lot of companies out there creating really great plastic-free products! In terms of toys brands, the companies we liked included Tender Leaf Toys, Le Toy Van, Hape, and Melissa & Doug.

Jenna first discovered Tender Leaf Toys at a play cafe with her son John. The company creates plastic-free toys with reclaimed rubberwood AND they replant trees. They test all toys for safety, use nontoxic paint and glues that do not contain formaldehyde. Their toys are handmade and beautiful!

Le Toy Van also creates beautiful wooden toys from rubberwood trees and replants. The paints they use are nontoxic, too. The majority of the packaging they use is biodegradable and the company has a goal of having 100% plastic-free packaging by 2026.

Not all Hape toys are plastic-free, but many are! We like Hape because many of their toys are wooden and FSC-certified. They are well made and durable!

We all know Melissa & Doug toys are great quality, and many of them are plastic-free or the majority of the toy is made with wood and nontoxic paints.

Take a peek at all our picks!

  1. Lalo Play Gym: This play gym is very lightweight and can go wherever you are easily! Love the wooden bars and soft mat! The black and white links are very durable, high contrast and motivate baby to reach and grab them. Plus they are nice and thick silicone for grasping and using as a teether. Hang other faves from the bar for variety. “EATPLAYSAY” saves 10%.

  2. Montessori Spinning Drum: This wooden toy prompts baby to reach out and touch/spin the spinner- so it’s great for keeping their attention and giving them something to watch. It can grow with baby, too, so you can use in tummy time first and then as they start working on sitting balance, as well as modeling words like “more, go, stop, spin.”

  3. Activity Cube: We LOVE this cube- perfect for a new sitter, stander, walker, and toddler, too! Spin the sides while sitting, push the beads on the track while standing, and label the animals, too. It’s made of wood and wire, making it a great choice!

  4. Montessori Toy: A 100% wooden toy that baby can use as they start to sit with support, or on their own! Practice picking up the balls and putting them in the hole, watch them roll out. This Montessori toy is designed to teach baby more about object permanence.

  5. Silicone Squirt Toys: I love that these are silicone and open up for easy cleaning - and no mold growth! Fun for bath time or outside in warm weather.

  6. Wooden Maracas & Shakers: A colorful musical toy for baby 6 months and older! Model the word “shake.” As your little one grows into toddlerhood they will continue to play, too!

  7. Farmyard Cube: My daughter really liked this one! Baby can do hands-on play with crinkle pages, mirrors, and listen to melodies. Plus the big soft cloth cube is great for new sitters as they find their balance. They can lean a little on the cube if they need help getting back into a fully upright position.

  8. Contrast Crinkle Book: We know that babies cannot see so well early on, so the higher contrast the toys, the better! It keeps baby’s attention and helps them scan the pages. Soft books are also easier for baby to hold and explore. Put out in front of baby once they can get their head up some and see if they will try to reach for it to hear the crinkle sounds!

  9. Silicone Stacking Cups: These are a fun option for water play with holes on the bottoms and different animals, too! Since these are silicone, they can be mouthed and used as teethers, too - and dishwasher safe.

  10. Chomp & Clack Alligator Walker: A great wooden walker option that makes fun noises as baby pushes it forward!

  11. Melissa & Doug Soft Blocks: These blocks are so cute, and they’re soft to practice stacking! Model “up, on top, push, down!”

  12. Wooden Ring Stacker: A plastic-free ring stacker! Lay the stacker on its side and let your little sitter pull the rings “off”, then model placing them back “on”.

  13. Melissa & Doug’s Hungry Pelican: We have this and it’s a fun toy to practice imitation! Open and close the pelican’s beak and feed him snacks! The feeding pieces squeak and rattle.

  1. Sophie the Giraffe: What an iconic teether! With her thicker head and body, she helps baby open wide. This is a great teether to have in play as baby mouths other toys, too. Sophie is made of 100% natural rubber!

  2. Silicone Teether w/Wooden Ring: Made with silicone and beech wood, this teether is easy for baby to grasp and each silicone nub has a different texture for them to chew and explore! Jenna had this one for her daughter!

  3. Miraloop: The “Jelly Dog” a great teether! Easy to hold, and made with little nubs that make it easy for baby to bite on, it’s also a great choice for baby. I recommend using around 4-5 months and continuing to offer in play as baby nears 12 months of age.

  4. Itzy Ritzy Rainbow: Okay, the Itzy Ritzy teethers are CUTE! I like that one side is textured to provide baby with sensory exploration. They’re made with 100% food-grade silicone and are really easy to clean. It’s a great option for one of baby’s first teethers, as it is easy to hold and soft in texture!

  5. Comotomo Teether: Otherwise known as the “octopus teether” - it’s my all-time favorite teether! It is easy to hold and has finger-like stubs that are great for baby to chomp on, without them going too far back to constantly gag! I recommend introducing this one around 4-5 months of age and continue to offer in play as baby nears 1.

  6. Ark Grabber: This one is very tough - making it great for babies who have recently started solids and are starting to chew more! The resistance helps strengthen baby’s jaw, and the shape of this teether makes it easy to hold! It’s a little longer, so it goes further back in baby’s mouth, making it a great teether to help push the gag reflex back and practice chewing in the back of the mouth.

  7. Carrot Teether: The handles are great on this one and it offers a bumpy texture at the carrot tip for baby to explore!

  8. Baby Banana: It lives up to the hype. It’s a great first toothbrush for baby before their first tooth erupts. It’s easy to hold as it has two little handles, and the bristles provide nice texture to baby’s oral sensory system. I recommend introducing around 3 months of age, help baby hold at first, and then let them play and mouth it!

  9. Munchkin Toon: Can be a spoon and a teether all in one! Great for bringing to restaurants and attaching to a busy mat, and using at mealtime! Baby can teeth on the square end or the spoon, and also practice scooping at mealtimes. It’s a two-in-one product and I love it!

  10. Silicone Fruit Teethers: Fun teethers with a nice handle to grasp and different textures for baby’s oral sensory system! You get 5 for a great price! Keep one in the diaper bag, one at home, another near the changing pad.

  11. Hollow Tubes: These are great for a baby who is just grasping and bringing items to their mouth! No, they cannot choke themselves with this teether, as choking occurs at the level of the windpipe (which is way farther than baby can push back), but it may elicit some gagging as these sticks can go pretty far back. However, the best way to move a gag reflex back is to elicit it and work through it while strengthening the jaw! These can come in handy as baby wishes to bite further back in their mouth, and you get several teethers for a low price.

  12. Ark Y Chew: A tough teether, but great for building jaw strength! The shorter ends are great for biting on both sides, and they all have different textured ends. I recommend offering around 9 months as chewing skills continue to build for harder foods.

  13. Nuby Teether: This is my FAVORITE first teether that I buy for pretty much every new mom I know. This bristles on this teether are soothing to baby’s gums, it doesn’t go too far back in the mouth, and it’s ring shape makes it easy to hold and mouth. It also comes with its own hygienic carrying case, which is just an added bonus.

  1. Dr. Brown’s Glass Options Bottles: Glass bottles with a silicone sleeve (optional to put on). I like these because it’s Dr. Brown’s Options brand which means you don’t even need to use the green plastic insert that comes along with it! It can be a COMPLETELY plastic-free bottle if you want it to be. I used these with P when she was younger from time to time and Jenna used for her daughter, too!

  2. Evenflo Glass Bottles: If you’re looking for glass bottles for your baby, this is another good option. Thermal resistant glass and venting within the nipple helps with a slower flow to baby. The long, sloped nipples promote deep breast-like latch and tongue cupping, so they are feeding specialist approved.

  3. Lansinoh Glass Bottles: These glass bottles are a good option for babies who have difficulty sustaining a latch because it requires less compression. It usually comes with level 2 nipples so make sure to grab slow flow!

  4. Tum Tum Straw Cup: This fully silicone cup is great for learning how to drink from a straw! Fill up at least halfway with water, cover the small hole in the lid with your finger and squeeze the cup to push the liquid up. Love that it has handles for easy holding AND it has a straw stopper so baby can’t pull the straw out. The narrow design of the straw also helps baby not suck up TOO much water, which is great as they learn!

  5. EZPZ Tiny Cup: This is a perfect sized small silicone cup for teaching open cup drinking! Little hands can hold it and it has a nice weight to the bottom. My favorite trick to teach parents is to fill it to the brim with a familiar PUREE that they have eaten on a spoon, and bring it to baby’s lips so they immediately get a taste of what is inside! And you don’t have to tilt it too much to give them some. Over time you can add some water to it so it’s not so thick and you work towards drinking plain water, but that skill takes time and isn’t expected to be done independently until 18 months. So starting at 6 months gives baby plenty of time to practice!

  6. Olababy Cup: My all time favorite cup! I love that it’s made from silicone, has a straw stopper so baby can’t pull the straw out, has a weighted bottom so it’s harder to knock over, is a great size for little hands, and doubles as an open cup. My FAVORITE part is that it teaches straw drinking! Plug the hole in the lid with your finger and gently squeeze the cup so liquid goes up the straw and into baby’s mouth. They quickly learn that if they suck on the straw, liquid will come up and BAM, they just learned how to drink from a straw.

  7. Klean Kanteen Bottle: My new favorite stainless steel and silicone cup for older toddlers! The cap twists to close making it spill proof and the design is easy to clean. It requires some good fine motor skills for littles to open and close by themselves so it’s best for about 2.5 years and older. It’s also 12 ounces so a good cup for toddlers and preschoolers who drink lots of water throughout the day! Sometimes the smaller bottles just aren’t enough.

  8. Pura Stainless Steel Bottle: A great plastic-free option! It does have a small valve that slightly impacts water flow, so I don’t love it for babies learning how to drink, but for toddlers who already have the skill down, it’s a thumbs up for me! 18 months + is likely best!

  9. Hippypotamus Open Cups: I love the size of these for toddlers because they are bigger than the smaller open cups, but still not too big for their hands. The textured pattern on the side also helps them grip the cup better! Two silicone cups for $7. Dishwasher safe and come in many colors!

  10. Elk & Friends Glass Tumblers: I love the Elk & Friends brand! These glass tumblers come in fun color combos and have a 12 ounce capacity, so they’re great for toddlers. You can use the straw, or simply use the sipping spout.

  11. Elk & Friends Stainless Steel Cups: We love these stainless steel + silicone cups! They’re great for toddlers who already drink from a straw very well! Perfect for milk or smoothies, the straw is a little bigger in diameter, so bigger sips come out. Also very easy to clean and plastic-free!

  12. bkr Glass Water Bottle: It’s hard to find a larger capacity glass water bottle, but here she is! This bottle is sleek and holds 32 ounces. The glass bottle is dishwasher safe and the silicone sleeve gives it extra protection when you’re sitting it down after taking a drink! Comes in lots of colors, too.

  13. Bambaw Stainless Water Bottle: This is a great water bottle for your day-to-day. It’s stainless steel, insulated, holds 24 ounces, and has a wider neck which means you can fit ice cubes into it if you want! It’s a climate pledge friendly product and certified climate neutral by ClimatePartner.

  1. Olababy Spoons: I LOVE these spoons - they are my favorite for 6-12 months. They have a nice flexible silicone bowl of the spoon that makes scooping easy when baby starts to try and scoop, and they are a great length for self-feeding a pre-loaded spoon.

  2. Munchkin Silicone Scoops: These are another great choice for 9-12 months and older! Short and sweet handle and soft bowl for scooping made with silicone.

  3. Nuby Dipeez: This two-sided silicone spoon is GENIUS! There is no wrong end when both ends are a spoon! Love the lip block on these too, so baby can’t push it too far back. Each end is also a different type of spoon (flat with bumps, slight smooth bowl), so baby experiences two different types of spoons in one.

  4. Wooden Compostable Utensils: If you’re on-the-go and looking for a plastic-free disposable option - these are great! Made with FSC-certified birchwood, these utensils are splinter-free and sturdy. They’re also compostable!

  5. Upward Spoons: The perfect little silicone spoon for scooping! I recommend introducing this spoon around 9 months (or earlier if you want!) and model how to scoop purees and mashed foods with it! After baby’s first birthday, scooping should start to be more independent.

  6. Weesprout Stainless Utensils: These are a great size for toddlers who are eating more independently. Made with stainless steel and silicone, they are dishwasher safe and affordable!

  7. EZPZ Tiny Bowl: This silicone suction bowl is kind of like a plate and a bowl at the same time. I love that the sides of the bowl are low, which helps baby with scooping and seeing their food. I’ve had mine for two years and it’s held up great!

  8. Weesprout Snack Containers: A great option to hold snacks & I love that it’s silicone! Easy to clean too as no little compartments that trap food.

  9. Olababy Bowl: One of my favorite silicone bowls! Suctions to the high chair and has a little lip on the side to help baby scoop and keep the food on the spoon! Also comes with a lid, making it a good travel option, too. Scooping is expected to be mostly independent around a year, so this bowl can help your little one be succesful!

  10. Weesprout Divided Plates: These are great silicone divider plates for littles as they approach one year of age. They also come with lids, so great for traveling or packing for daycare!

  11. Stainless Steel Utensils: If you don’t want to use disposable utensils, this set of stainless steel utensils is a great option and comes with a travel case to easily pack in your purse or bag!

  12. EZPZ Mini Mat: This silicone suction mat sticks really well to most high chairs! It’s a great size and it divides food so baby can clearly see their choices. Plus, it’s great for toddlers, so you’ll get a lot of use out of it!
