Choosing the best infant car seat is one of the more important decisions you’ll make before bringing your baby home. It’s one of the first pieces of baby gear you’ll use, the one required for that drive home from the hospital. And most likely, your infant car seat is something you’ll rely on and use every day.
But with so many options on the market, how do you know which one is right for your family?
There are ultra-lightweight designs that make carrying baby easier, travel-friendly car seats that work seamlessly with stroller systems, seats made without added flame retardants, and more. Infant car seats today offer more features than ever. Safety technology has also evolved, with innovations like load legs, anti-rebound bars, rigid LATCH systems, and side-impact protection.
In this post, we’re breaking down some of the most popular infant car seat brands and models and highlighting what makes each one stand out.
A note on car seat safety:
Even if your infant car seat isn’t on this list, remember that doesn’t mean it’s not a good option or that it isn’t safe. Every car seat sold in the United States must pass stringent safety testing before making it onto the market. As long as you buy a new car seat directly from the manufacturer or a reputable retailer, you can rest assured it’s passed all the required safety tests.
Car seats must be installed correctly in order to guarantee safety. It’s critical to read each car seat’s specific installation instructions to make sure your car seat is installed safely and securely.
How do I find my infant car seat expiry date?
Some parents already have an infant car seat from their previous littles. It’s important to note that car seats do expire. Most infant car seats expire 6–10 years from the date of manufacture, depending on the brand and model.
And yes, expiration dates DO matter. You should not reuse your infant car seat or pass it down to someone if it’s expired.
You can find the expiration date for your infant car seat on a sticker on the bottom or back of the seat, stamped into the plastic shell, and/or in the instruction manual.
Best Car Seats for Infants
Whether you’re prioritizing budget, zero flame retardant chemicals, extended height limits, or ease of installation, you can compare infant car seat options and feel confident in your choice.
If you’re looking for a car seat you can use every day but is lightweight and easy to travel with too, the Uppababy Aria is the clear winner. I can’t believe how light it is! At just 6 lbs, it feels like I’m lifting almost nothing in comparison to the other infant car seats I’ve used.

How to Clean Car Seats
With babies comes spit up and blowouts. And while we never want it to happen, sometimes these messes take place in the car seat. So, how do you clean your car seat safely?
First and foremost, always consult your car seat’s user manual for specific cleaning instructions. Many car seat manufacturers provide detailed guidance on how to clean each component of your baby’s car seat safely and effectively.
Important Notes:
Always read the user manual before cleaning
Use only mild soap and water—never bleach or harsh cleaning products
Wipe down hard surfaces with a damp cloth
Never soak or submerge the harness straps
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for removing and reinstalling seat padding
Pro Tip: Before removing any padding, take photos or record a quick video of the car seat. This will make it much easier to reassemble everything correctly after cleaning.

Most parenting resources come from a single expert's perspective, but development doesn't really work that way.
You can't fully understand feeding without input from both a dietitian and a feeding specialist. You can't properly address milestones without OT, PT, and SLP perspectives working together. That's why every Eat Play Say resource is created collaboratively by our entire team — giving you the most comprehensive guidance possible, all in one place.
