Children’s stepping stones offer a variety of gross motor play and activities. They’re great toys to encourage movement that work both indoors and outdoors! While they facilitate larger motor movements, they usually don’t take up much space as most sets stack or nest for easy storage. We love stepping stones for imaginative play and encouraging movement – even on rainy days!
What are the benefits of playing with children’s stepping stones?
While it may just seem like your child is taking big steps, there are many gross motor benefits to playing with stepping stones. As they step and play, they’re working on balance, core strength, and coordination. They’re also getting a better understanding of spatial awareness. More than simply getting kids moving, stepping stones can also be a part of imaginative play scenarios!
Top Picks: Children’s Stepping Stones
If you’re looking for classic children’s stepping stones, these are our favorites. Suitable for indoor and outdoor play, they provide endless play opportunities.
These are our favorite children’s stepping stones! We’ve had the Stapelstein Stepping Stones for 3+ years and they still look brand new.
The rainbow colors are bright and vibrant. These stepping stones are made with expandable polypropylene and without added toxins, pollutants, or harmful additives. They’re safe for play and support up to 396 lbs. – so parents can play, too!
Flip the stepping stones over and use them as mini balance boards
Easily nest or stack when not in use
Supports over 350 lbs., so parents can play and participate, too!
Take Note
While they’re great quality, Stapelstein Stepping Stones are one of the most expensive options on the market.
These stepping stones slip if they’re not on carpet!
Each pack includes six stones, and the stones are all the same size and height. Adding another set would give kids more pieces to build obstacle courses and create new games. However, the cost can add up quickly.
The Nuby StepPebbles are nearly identical to the Stapelstein Stepping Stones, making them a quality dupe if you’re looking to save money. This set also comes with a balance board for additional balance opportunities.
What we love
Great quality children’s stepping stones at a more affordable price
Bonus balance board provides more playtime opportunities
The Nuby StepPebbles are a relatively new product and sell out quickly.
While these stepping stones are a good dupe, you may see slight imperfections in the design. The Stapelstein stepping stones are made with better quality overall.
These stepping stones slip if they’re not on carpet!
Tiny Land’s Stepping Stones come in 4 different color combinations to match any playroom or aesthetic. The textured top provides great sensory input to the bottom of little ones’ feet as they balance and play.

Stackable for easy storage
Take Note
This set only comes with 5 stepping stones while many other sets come with at least 6
These children’s stepping stones stand out for their built-in modules that squeak when stepped or jumped on. Each time a child puts their weight on one, the auditory input from the squeak engages them to walk or jump more!
What we love
Auditory input can be more engaging for toddlers
Non-slip bottoms keep stepping stones more secure while littles jump and play
Durable and sturdy enough to hold 200+ lbs.
Bright, vibrant colors
Take Note
The squeaking sound is not overly loud, but could easily become a nuisance for parents.
This set only contains 5 stepping stones while many comparable sets include 6.
This affordable set of children’s stepping stones has textured tops to help little ones gain traction and balance. I love how large of a surface area each step provides – about 10 inches! There’s a spinner that comes with this set to make it into a game. Spin and tell your child what stepping stone to run or jump to next!
What we love
Affordable cost, with 8 pieces costing less than $25
Large, textured surface area for walking and jumping
Comes with color spinner to turn play into a game
Super durable and sturdy enough to hold 250 lbs.
Take Note

Price: $22.99 Material: Polypropylene Weight Limit: Not specified by the manufacturer Heights: 1.75” and 3” Pieces: 6
These children’s stepping stones are a great choice for toddlers. They come in two heights: 1.75 inches and 3 inches. The lower stones with only two varying heights are a good starting point for younger toddlers.
What we love
Super affordable price tag
Non-slip bottoms
Bright, playful colors
Great height levels for toddlers learning balance and coordination
Take Note
A weight limit is not specified by the manufacturer.
I got these Giggle & Play Stepping Stones when I was teaching in the baby and toddler room at our Co-Op. I love the quality and 4 height variations. You can start out with the 2 lower heights and as littles gain confidence, add the 2 taller heights.
What we love
12 stepping stones with 4 varying heights provide more opportunities for playtime and challenging balance and coordination
Textured tops for better grip and non-slip bottoms
Great for indoor and outdoor play
Durable and sturdy, can withstand 220 lbs.
Take Note
Young toddlers may need to practice and work up to using the 2 taller stone heights.
The different heights also mean some stones have a smaller surface area to step on. This can make them more challenging to balance on compared with larger, same-height stepping stones.
Price: $43 Material: Plastic Weight Limit: Not specified Pieces: 12
This stepping stone and balance beam play combination is great for older toddlers. The balance beam pieces are wavy, giving even more challenge as littles try to walk and balance on varying heights. Children get a lot of good tactile input from the various textured stones and beams as well.
Adding to the fun, this set comes with a musical pod that lights up. It can flash different colors without sound, play music, or provide prompts for kids. For example, it will ask little ones to walk and find the orange stone. Kids work on gross motor skills as they play and you can incorporate learning opportunities like color recognition.
What we love
One set incorporates tons of play activities and gross motor development
Provides sensory input with colors, music, lights, and textured pieces
Stackable pieces for easy storage
Affordable price
Take Note
Requires 2 AA batteries, though they are included.
The musical pod may not be as durable as the other plastic pieces, so play with caution.
While the pieces stack for storage, this set still takes up a decent amount of room given the stepping stones and balance beam pieces.
The Acorn Avenue Balance Beam and Stepping Stones Set is popular and well-liked by users. Each stepping stone has a different non-slip texture on top for tactile input. Because the balance beam pieces are all the same size and height, there are tons of different ways to connect them!
What we love
Provides lots of different configurations so playtime doesn’t get boring
Non-slip textures and colors on top of each stepping stone
This set has a lower weight limit compared to other stepping stone toys
The stepping stones have a non-slip top, but the balance beam does not. It’s best used in barefeet or sneakers with good tread.
The balance beam pieces need to be lined up correctly to fit together. While they do fit nice and tight, sometimes it’s hard to take them apart for storage!
While the pieces stack nicely, this set takes up more room than other children’s stepping stones because of the added balance beam pieces.
Stepping Stone Play Ideas
You may think of children’s stepping stones and envision a child stepping from one stone to another. And while that’s definitely one way to play, there are so many others! Here are some ways to get more variety of play.
Practice Stacking and Nesting – Many children’s stepping stones stack together or nest within each other. Allow your child to practice taking them apart and putting them back together. This works on gross and fine motor skills.
The Floor is Lava – This popular game turns the floor into hot lava! Kids jump from one stepping stone to another to avoid touching the floor. Add pillows, cushions, or other safe objects to create a fun obstacle course.
Sorting & Categorizing – Flip the stepping stones upside down so they function more like bowls. Challenge your little one to sort different toys or items by color, or use the “bowls” to categorize items.
Balance Challenge – As your child becomes more skilled in balance, challenge them to stand on one foot on the stepping stones.
Jumping – Once they get the hang of walking across the stepping stones, move them closer together and practice jumping from one stone to the next!
Hide and Seek – Use the stepping stones to hide different items around the room. Have your little one search underneath the stones to find the “hidden treasure.”

Most parenting resources come from a single expert's perspective, but development doesn't really work that way.
You can't fully understand feeding without input from both a dietitian and a feeding specialist. You can't properly address milestones without OT, PT, and SLP perspectives working together. That's why every Eat Play Say resource is created collaboratively by our entire team — giving you the most comprehensive guidance possible, all in one place.
