Forget spending thousands! I customized our nursery closet for only $300, and I can change the layout again and again as baby grows and our needs change. I am here two years later to give you an update, and you bet- we are still using the same closet system! Let me show you how we did it!
Nursery Closet on A Budget
Custom closets can cost THOUSANDS. Especially with the price of wood right now, that’s not an exaggeration. I wanted to invest in a functional closet space, but didn’t wan’t to spend a fortune doing it, OR be stuck with a closet system that can’t adapt as baby’s needs change. So, I bought this closet organizer from Amazon. It can adjust to fit multiple-size closets, and you can move the shelves around to any configuration you want. It was simple to install and a great use of space! It comes in two adjustable sizes, so pick the one that fits your space best!
Use Baskets
A combination of small and large baskets (that you can later use somewhere else) is the best idea! Target has the hookup (are we shocked?!) These small, felt baskets were perfect to sit on top of the shelves. I have socks, mittens, hats, sleep sacks/swaddles, and burp cloths within reach at the perfect height. They are no longer made, but these rope baskets are the same size!
The larger version is great for up top, storing larger sleep sacks, extra blankets, baby carrying wraps and more things that I don’t use frequently. I also used these coiled rope baskets from Target! They are in our primary closet, too. They are sturdy, but also have some give for oddly-shaped items.
Lastly, these baby hangers from Amazon were a great price. I like to hang everything (even the teeny tiny newborn pants) so I can see all the clothes. Nothing is more disappointing than finding a cute outfit hidden in the closet drawer, only to realize that baby already outgrew it!
Nursery Toy Storage
Use the dead closet space for toy storage and easy toy rotation! This is the space that will likely change as your little one grows, so it’s a good idea to put something here that isn’t permanent so you can keep customizing the space as you need to!
After I put all of baby’s clothes and accessories in the closet, I was still left with a bunch of room at the bottom. Having a smaller nursery means you want to use every INCH of space as you can! Instead of just throwing random baskets down there, I decided to put a moveable toy organization system inside! Plus I can use it later in a different room or even in the basement for storage down the line! This basket system was super easy to put together and makes toy rotation so simple. Watch the price! I snagged it for $58 and it tends to hover between $60-80 depending on the color. There is also a larger one that I wish I could have fit in this space, and sometimes is a better price than the smaller one!
Favorite Toys for Baby
Hand picked by the professionals on our team, these are our favorite toys for newborns!
The Closet Update Two Years Later
Well, we ended up having a little girl! Around the time she turned one, my older son was getting more independent with dressing himself, and I decided to do a little switch-a-roo with their closets. They both have the same system installed, I just swapped what was in that lower “dead space.”
I brought her dresser into the closet to fit her pants and pajamas, and gave him the toy storage bin to use for clothes! Since most of her toys were now mixed with his in our living room, it was genius!!
Closet Organization Doesn’t Have to be Expensive
I’m so excited that I was able to customize our space with organizers that can serve MULTIPLE purposes, and most importantly, can change as baby’s needs change. Now, two years later you can see how we changed things up without spending any more money!
